Theory 9 - Battery and Power Distribution Panel(PDP) Placement

When designing a “wiring harness”, or integrated wiring solution for an FRC robot, a good place to start is with the largest and heaviest components, the battery and PDP. The battery connection to the PDP also has the thickest wires on the robot, so placement of both are a good place to start when considering wire harness design.

Theory 10 - Electrical Part Configuration

With a number of different electrical components necessary for a functional robot, considering where to place things such as the RoboRio, motor controllers, solenoids, the pneumatic control module (PCM), etc., is of critical importance. For instance, since the PCM controls the solenoids, placing them in close proximity to each other is most likely a good idea. Ideas such as this will be learned as part of Electrical Part Configuration.

Theory 11 - Routing Channels

Having a clean, safe, and easy to understand and repair electrical system is very important in robotics. Students will learn how to use routing channels to feed wires from one area of the robot to another so that they will not be damaged by robot movement, mechanisms, or contact with other robots or field elements.

Theory 12 - Controller Area Network (CAN) Routing

The CAN is used so that multiple different electrical components can communicate with the RoboRio. Routing the CAN cables in an efficient manner will be learned in this module.

Theory 13 - Strain Relief

One of the most critical parts of the electrical systems in FRC is that of strain relief. This means that all wires/connectors/modules are set up so that movements of any mechanisms on the robot or contact with other robots, field elements, and game pieces to not dislodge wiring or connectors. Using methods such as zip ties, wire sleeving, parametric cable chain, and rubber grommets to secure wiring and prevent wire fray, a specialist electrical division member will help to build a robust robot.
